چکیده

Consensus means general agreement among possibly di erent views, while dichotomus voting rules are a means of making decisions by using votes to settle di erences of view. How then can it often be the case that a committee whose only formal mechanism for decision-making is a dichotomus voting rule reaches a consensus? In this paper, based on a game-theoretic model developed in three previous papers, we provide an answer to this question. Journal of Economic Literature Classi cation Numbers: C7, D7

Quaternary dichotomous voting rules

In this paper we provide a general model of ‘quaternary’dichotomous voting rules (QVRs), namely, voting rules for making collective dichotomous decisions (to accept or reject a proposal), based on vote pro…les in which four options are available to each voter: voting (‘yes’, ‘no’or ‘abstaining’) or staying home and not turning out. The model covers most of actual real-world dichotomus rules, wh...

Factor analysis versus multi-dimensional scaling: binary choice roll-call voting and the US Supreme Court

We evaluate factor analysis and multi-dimensional scaling (MDS) as tools for the analysis of voter decisions over a series of dichotomous choices. We simulate binary voting data with a known form and illustrate that standard factor analyses of these types of data yield additional artifactual dimensions. This effect may be exacerbated by the choice of inter-voter measures of similarity used as i...

Approval voting and Arrow's impossibility theorem

Approval voting has attracted considerable interest among voting theorists, but they have rarely investigated it in the Arrovian framework of social welfare functions (SWF) and never connected it with Arrow’s impossibility theorem. This note explores these two directions. Assuming that voters have dichotomous preferences, it first characterizes approval voting in terms of its SWF properties and...

Collaborative learning: the effects of trust and open and closed dynamics on consensus and efficacy

The current study compared the effects of open versus closed group dynamics on perceived consensus, objective consensus, and perceived efficacy of collaborative learning in participants high and low in dispositional trust in the context of an Interactive Management (IM) session. Interactive management is a computermediated collaborative tool designed to enhance group problem-solving by facilita...

On measures of cohesiveness under dichotomous opinions: Some characterizations of approval consensus measures

The measurement of the degree of agreement in a group has recently attracted considerable attention by researchers from various fields. In this paper we consider situations where each member of a population classifies a list of options as either “acceptable” or “non-acceptable” (as in job committees or elections by approval voting); either “agree” or “disagree” (as in polls or surveys); either ...
